The Exploratorium

The new Exploratorium is a 422,166 sq ft facility located at Piers 15 & 17 along the Embarcadero in San Francisco.  The project will create a new campus that doubles the Exploratorium’s current site and places the museum/educational complex along the waterfront with better visibility to the general public and easy access to public transportation.  The new facility will house a labyrinth of approximately two miles of piping that extends beneath the pier.  The construction provided unique challenges as BMC navigated workers on rafts to suspend piping from the underside of the Pier.  BMC provided the complete installation of Storm, Sanitary Waste & Vent and Domestic Cold Water plumbing systems for the new facility.  BMC also installed sustainable elements to the plumbing design that captures a portion of the rain water runoff to be reused for toilet and urinal flushing.  The project is pursuing a LEED® Platinum certification with the U.S. Green Building Council.
