The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Downtown Educational Complex is a brand new, 123,000 sq ft educational development located on 5.5-acres of OUSD-owned land situated on in the city’s Lake Merritt “Channel Area”. When complete, the complex will house the 360-student La Escuelita K-5 elementary school, the 180-student MetWest High School and the 168-student Child Development Center. Phase 1 of the development will construct a 71,7000sq ft, two-story classroom building that includes an adjacent multipurpose building containing a full service kitchen, cafeteria, health clinic, gymnasium, data center and the district’s TV Station. BMC performed the complete installation of passive evaporative cooling towers that utilize integrated misting systems to provide cool air to large common areas with minimal energy use. The HVAC system also includes standard and fan powered VAV’s as well as the installation of oversized ceiling fans. The project will seek certification under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) Verified Program, the standard for high performance school design in California.
